Stream Bank Stabilization

For the City of Concord, California

Plan Excerpt

Questa was retained to design a stabilization plan for approximately 100 feet of eroding bank at Hillcrest Community Park. The project was necessary to repair damage incurred during a flood event, to ensure continued public access and utilization of an important community park and transportation corridor, and to protect channel banks from further erosion. The project design included demolishing and repairing a severely damaged bridge abutment, and stabilizing failed channel banks to protect a bicycle/pedestrian bridge, adjacent park trails, and water and electric utilities lines. Biotechnical bank stabilization methods, such as native willow planted rock slopes and large woody debris (LWD) deflectors, were used along channel banks to stabilize erosion areas and to provide additional habitat complexity for aquatic species. Questa prepared PS&Es, permit applications, CEQA Initial Study, and Spill Control and Countermeasures Plan (SCCP), conducted a pre-construction biological survey and construction worker sensitive wildlife awareness training, and provided construction bidding and implementation support. Questa is also providing post-construction biological monitoring of the site.
